When we talk about Respect with children, we usually think about manners, listening, and following directions.

Those things matter, but Respect goes deeper.

Respect is understanding that other people matter too.

Their time matters.
Their feelings matter.
Their boundaries matter.
Their effort matters.

Part of growing up is learning that we will not always get what we want, go first, win, or have everyone agree with us.

That is where Respect begins.

At USK, Respect is one of our 6 Core Life Skills, but it also connects directly to the traditional philosophy of Tang Soo Do. The Ten Articles of Faith, Eight Key Concepts, and Song of Sip Sam Seh all reinforce ideas like self-control, humility, awareness, proper conduct, and consideration for others.

At home, parents can help develop Respect by teaching children to wait without interrupting, accept “no,” take care of shared spaces, listen to correction, and win or lose with character.

These may seem like small things, but they teach a very big lesson:

“I am important, but I am not the only person who is important.”

In the do jang, we reinforce that lesson every day through the way students bow, listen, train with partners, care for their space, and respond to their teachers.

Because ultimately, Respect is not just about how a child behaves when an adult is watching.

It is about the kind of person they are becoming when no one is.
